In a letter to colleagues in December 1930, Wolfgang
Pauli suggested a “desperate remedy” to the problem.
Pauli postulated that the missing energy was carried away by a new particle. But to solve the problem, the new particle had properties such that it could not yet be detected: it carried no electric charge and it scarcely interacted with matter at all.
